Eye injuries in children with rheumatological diseases in a pediatric hospital
Abstract
Introduction: Rheumatic diseases are a group of chronic systemic disorders caracterized by connective tissue inflammatio. Rheumatic diseases in children can cause inflammation of all structures of the eye. Early detection can prevent complications that lead to decreased visual acuity or even visual loss.
Objective: To describe ocular pathologies observed in pediatric patients with rheumatological disease at the Hospital General Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu, from May to October 2019.
Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. Patients with rheumatological disease undergoing ophthalmological evaluation were included. Studied variables included age, sex, rheumatological diagnosis, presence of ocular symptoms, presence and type of ocular pathology, location, time of evolution, and treatment received. The data were analyzed with SPSS v21 using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the institution.
Results: 61 patients with a median of 12 years and a female predominance were included. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis was the most frequent rheumatological diagnosis (41%). Ocular pathology was observed in 27.8%. The most frequent lesion was keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Ocular lesions presented at a median of 18 months after the disease was diagnosed.
Conclusions: 27.8% of the patients with rheumatological disease had ocular involvement. The most frequent lesson found was keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
